Be Part of Africa's Industrialization
Why Invest?
A country's manufacturing industry has a significant impact on its economy.
In the space of 30 years, eight hundred million Chinese citizens were removed from abject poverty on the strength of the Chinese manufacturing sector.
In 1990, over 50% of the world's desperately poor were living in China. Subsaharan Africa faces a similar problem today.
However, unlike China, today, Subsaharan Africa has additional challenges of stricter global trade constraints and climate and environmental regulations.
A compounding factor to this problem is the limited talent and technical know-how in the region. A lack of industrialization over the years has created a vast knowledge gap, and expert talent is needed to industrialize the region. This conundrum has been a major factor in why the region remains underdeveloped to date.
We present a solution to Africa's underdevelopment that can surmount these seemingly monumental challenges--Titanium Dioxide manufacture using pre-fabricated modules. These modules are manufactured under the best global talent and shipped to Sub-Saharan Africa, where they are simply assembled, and production can begin.
From China, we can connect economic growth to industrialization, and chemical manufacturing is the second-highest contributor to China's industrial sector. Moreso, in Sub-Saharan Africa, chemicals have the second-largest amount of imports.
Modular plants provide a much simpler, less risky solution to industrializing Africa. Modular plants are built faster, require less upfront capital, and have greater flexibility which allows for easy expansion.
With as many modular plants as required spread across the continent, we can beat the talent gap and develop the economies of Africa.
Why Titanium Dioxide?
Titanium Dioxide (TIO2) is an important industrial chemical widely used as a white pigment in many industries—paints, plastics, paper, and ceramics. It is the most used pigment globally, accounting for 70% of the global pigment market.
However, it is not produced locally in Nigeria. Manufacturers rely entirely on imports of the chemical.
The wide use of TiO2 across several industries with ramifications for economic growth has made its per capita consumption an indicator of the economic development of a nation. Nigeria has a TiO2 per capita consumption of 0.04 kg, which is very low compared to that of the United States and Germany, which are 2.71 kg and 4.17 kg, respectively. Even South Africa has a TiO2 per capita consumption of 0.59 kg, more than ten times higher than Nigeria’s. These underscore the poor level of development in Nigeria's chemical industry and emphasize the massive opportunity for TiO2 market growth and investment in Nigeria.
20,000 tonnes per annum TiO2 Plant in Nigeria
PyVee aims to tap into the growth opportunity for the TiO2 market in Nigeria by establishing a 20,000 tonnes/annum TiO2 plant in the country. The proposed range of plant capacity is based on a preliminary economic feasibility study and projected local demand of 11,950 tonnes/annum of TiO2 in Nigeria by 2026. The demand for TiO2 in Nigeria is 8,560 tonnes/annum (2022). A growth of ten times this current demand will put the market size at 85,600 tonnes/annum and give Nigeria a new TiO2 per capita consumption of 0.4 kg.
Industrially, chlorine is prepared by the electrolysis of brine (salt water) in a Chlor Alkali unit. This unit produces chlorine and Sodium Hydroxide, another high-in-demand chemical in Nigeria (88.6 kilotonnes of Sodium Hydroxide was imported to Nigeria in 2019). Both Titanium Dioxide and Sodium Hydroxide were in the top five chemicals imported into Nigeria in 2018. Thus, there is a unique opportunity to produce both Titanium Dioxide and Sodium Hydroxide in the same plant for the Nigerian market. Since demand in Nigeria's plastics industry is great and also substantially import-dependent, there is also the possibility of producing chlorine in excess to use as an intermediate for Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) production.
Finally, because PyVee aims to be a net-zero emissions company, we intend to convert carbon oxides emitted during the TiO2 manufacturing process to dry ice and possibly methanol
